Burlington, VT
Historic Restoration, Institutional

Project Overview:
The historic “Carnegie Wing” of Burlington’s Fletcher Free Library, built in 1904, is currently undergoing a significant restoration of its key envelope components. This vital project aims to preserve the architectural integrity of the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The scope of work encompasses a comprehensive restoration of the exterior, including masonry, stone, and terra cotta elements. In addition, the project addresses critical health and safety concerns through lead-based paint abatement. The original wood windows and doors are also being meticulously restored, ensuring both historical accuracy and improved energy efficiency.
This ambitious restoration is being financed, in part, by a Federal “Save America’s Treasures” grant. As a condition of this funding, the project must adhere to specific federal requirements. This includes compliance with the Davis-Bacon Wage Act, which mandates prevailing wages for workers.
Construction on the Carnegie Wing restoration began recently and is targeting a completion date in late Fall 2025. This project represents a significant investment in preserving a cherished piece of Burlington’s history for future generations.
