Project Overview:
An historic adaptation of an existing office building to provide 20 new units of affordable housing for Central Vermont.
Soon to be listed on the National Historic Register, this 15,000 SF, 4 story building was originally built to serve as a nurse’s dormitory for staff at Montpelier’s original hospital. Scope of renovations will include, building envelope improvements, foundation repair, exterior brick repairs, new electrical and HVAC systems, window restoration, roofing repair, interior demolition and new partitions, and new finishes throughout. Site improvements will include stormwater management, site utilities, landscaping, infrastructure and a new
elevator/stairway tower.
The 20 apartments, developed and operated by Downstreet Housing & Community Development, will consist of a mix of studio, one-, and two-bedroom units. The project will meet Efficiency Vermont’s High-Performance standards and the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board-Vermont Housing Finance Agency Building Design Standards.
Currently in preconstruction, Ellis Commons is slated to begin construction in 2027.
